Janene Roberson, 52, suffered from multiple sclerosis and lived at the Meadowbrook Care Center. Roberson was taken to an emergency room where testing revealed evidence of liver damage, dehydration and an infection.

Roberson was diagnosed as having a urinary tract infection of the kidney and severe sepsis. Despite undergoing aggressive treatment, she died nine days later. She was survived by her sister, Margaret.

Roberson’s estate sued Meadowbrook Healthcare LLC, alleging negligence and violation of the state’s Nursing Home Residents Bill of Rights. The estate asserted that the nursing home facility was chronically understaffed and provided substandard care.

Thomas Handzus, 75, suffered from dementia, schizophrenia, malnutrition and other ailments. He was a resident of Meadowview Rehabilitation & Nursing Center.

During his approximate three-month stay at this nursing home facility, he experienced weight loss, aggressive behavioral disturbances and confusion. Handzus also left the facility unsupervised or was wandering.  It became necessary for him to be transferred to a behavioral health unit for psychiatric care.

After Handzus returned to the nursing home, he fell and hit his head. Following a hospitalization, he was transferred to hospice care and died several days later. He was survived by his son.

Toni Gethers was an elderly woman who suffered from numerous health issues and required assistance with activities of daily living. She was admitted to Hillcrest Center Nursing Facility for a short-term stay.

Over the next five months, she developed a worsening Stage III pressure ulcer, dehydration and acute renal failure among other medical problems.

She also experienced significant weight loss and was hospitalized several times, including once for treatment of pneumonia and osteomyelitis of the sacrum. Her injuries eventually led to her passing. She was survived by her two adult sons.
