Traumatic Brain Injury to Children

Children tend to be resilient; a scrape on the knee or elbow and it is back to playing like nothing happened. Children bounce back quickly. However, a new study shows that recovery time is slow in a case of a head injury or concussion to children.

This new finding was found in the June 2013 issue of the journal Pediatrics.

If a child suffers a blow to the head, it can result in a concussion. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury. The brain is a soft organ surrounded by and encased by the hard bony structure, the skull. All concussions are serious. The long term effects have been studied as recently as late August 2013. Over 4,500 retired and former National Football League (NFL) players settled their lawsuit for $765 million against the NFL. The case alleged that all of these former players suffer today from some kind of brain damage blamed on the blows to the head during their football playing careers. Most likely these blows to the head were concussions that were undetected or left untreated during this time.

The Pediatrics study shows that in 280 young people, ages 11 to 22 with reports of concussion, all had symptoms during the next 12 weeks. The study revealed that children who had never had a concussion recovered faster than those who had a prior concussion. First time concussion sufferers recovered in about 12 days from the head injury. Those who had a past history of a concussion, took more than 24 days to fully recover.

Children who suffer concussions are most often associated with sports and activities related to sporting activities, such as football and soccer. Parents of children who have suffered the concussion should be alerted to the fact that a second concussion can be more severe than the first and should be carefully monitored.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has created a website for parents and coaches to provide information on children with concussions. The program is called “Heads Up”. www.cdc.gov/concussion/headsup

“Bob Kreisman did everything possible in handling the trial of this case. It was devastating that I traumatically lost my leg above the knee in this truck accident. However, it was not an easy case to win. His staff was so prepared for the trial that it was not surprising that the settlement offers continued to rise until we finally accepted the multi-million settlement while the jury was still deciding the case. My wife and I were delighted that we could secure our future with this settlement. We thank Mr. Kreisman and his incredible staff for working so hard for our benefit.” T.P.

“My mother died because doctors dropped the ball. I called Robert Kreisman and he immediately set up an appointment for my entire family. We met at his offices and I was very comfortable that he would do the best for my dad and my brothers. He spent hours with all of us in preparing for depositions and he hired top notch experts, all of which contributed to an incredible settlement before trial. I know that he is dedicated to his cases and particularly to the people he works for and the people who work with him. He continues to be generous in contributing annually to my mother’s memory and to make known to the public the signs and symptoms of brain tumors.” V.S.

“My dad was ignored and mistreated at the nursing home that we placed him in. It didn’t take long for us to realize that we made a big mistake, particularly after my dad developed these terrible bedsores. We transferred him as we were contacting Mr. Kreisman. He was referred to us by a lawyer we have known for a long time and respect his opinion. Mr. Kreisman and his staff worked tirelessly to resolve this case. We were fortunate to have his services and will recommend him to anyone.” T.J.
