Oak Forest, Illinois
Oak Forest, Illinois is in suburban southwest Cook County. The city lies about 24 miles south/southwest of downtown Chicago. As of the last census, the population stood at about 28,000 individuals.
In the early 19th century, the area currently defined as the boundaries of Oak Forest was called Cooper’s Grove. The Cooper family settled the area in the 1830s and was said to have been one of the first residents of the township. The earliest reference to the community as “Oak Forest” had mostly to do with the fact that it was settled near a forest preserve that included mature oak trees. Oak Forest was incorporated as a village in 1947 and later incorporated as the City of Oak Forest in 1971. Since 1981 the city has operated as a Home Rule Community.
To this day, Oak Forest which is part of the Chicago metropolitan area, is surrounded by the Cook County Forest Preserves.
Oak Forest is home to Oak Forest High School, which is one of four high schools in Bremen Community High School District 228. Oak Forest is a part of the Community Park District 510. Also in Oak Forest are branches of DePaul University, University of St. Francis, Chicago State University, Governor’s State University and Illinois Institute of Technology.
Oak Forest Hospital serves the area as a large hospital specializing in long-term care. Oak Forest is served by U.S. Route 6 (159th St.), Cicero Avenue and nearby Interstate 57. A Metra commuter rail line is located at 159th and Cicero, which is a convenient station for those working in Chicago.
