The Westwood Manor has an overall rating that is considered much above average. The facility has 115 certified beds that participates both in Medicare and Medicaid. The facility is located in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on Chicago’s north side.

The Illinois Department of Health and Human Services regularly inspects Illinois nursing homes approximately every 18 months. These inspections are for standard health inspections or for an investigation following up on a complaint made on behalf of a resident or by a resident.

There were a series of complaint inspections between August 1, 2015 and July 31, 2016 at The Westwood Manor. In violations noted from the health inspection that was done on December 17, 2015, found four separate health deficiencies at The Westwood Manor. The average number of health deficiencies in Illinois nursing homes is 7.7, whereas the average number of health deficiencies in the U.S. is 7. There was one resident assessment deficiency found, one resident’s rights deficiency found, one pharmacy deficiency found and one environmental deficiency found.

During these inspections at Illinois nursing homes fire safety deficiencies are reviewed. There were a total of two fire safety deficiencies found at The Westwood Manor. The average number of fire deficiencies in Illinois is 6.5. The U.S. average of fire safety deficiencies is 3.3. One fire alarm system deficiency was found and one electrical deficiency was found.

The number of complaints filed by a resident or on behalf of resident for any issue is recorded. Following a complaint, the Illinois Department of Health and Human Services will investigate such complaint. There was one inspection done on February 18, 2014 that had to do with the protection of residents who may have been the subject of abuse, physical punishment and/or being separated from others. The correction of this issue was made on February 25, 2014, one week later. Another issue raised by a complaint filed on June 10, 2014 had to do with the hiring of people with no legal history of abusing, neglecting or mistreating residents or report and investigate any acts or reports of abuse, neglect or mistreatment of residents. The level of harm with respect to this complaint was considered to be minimal or would affect only a few residents. The date of correction with respect to this complaint was corrected on July 2, 2014.

The overall staffing rating for The Westwood Manor is below average. On the other hand, the registered nurse staffing rating is above average. The total number of licensed nurse staff hours per resident per day at The Westwood Manor was 37 minutes. This was lower than the Illinois average of 1 hour and 33 minutes and the national average of 1 hour and 42 minutes. The registered nurse hours per resident per day at The Westwood Manor shown to be 31 minutes, whereas the Illinois average is 56 minutes and the national average is 51 minutes. The LPN/LVN hours per resident per day at The Westwood Manor were just 6 minutes. This compared very poorly next to the Illinois average of 37 minutes and the national average of 51 minutes in this category. The certified nursing assistant (CNA) hours per resident per day was listed at 1 hour and 5 minutes for The Westwood compared to 2 hours and 15 minutes for the Illinois nursing home average. The Westwood Manor compared very poorly to the Illinois average and even worse compared to the national averages of CNA hours per resident per day which was 2 hours and 28 minutes. On the other hand, The Westwood Manor showed that it provided 7 minutes for physical therapy staff hours per resident per day, which was higher than the Illinois and national averages which was 6 minutes in this category.

In quality measures, The Westwood Manor rated much above average. For example, 8% of The Westwood Manor‘s short-stay residents who reported moderate to severe pain was at that percentage much lower than the Illinois nursing home average of 15.3% and the U.S. average of 16.9% in this category. At The Westwood Manor, 1.7% of its short-stay residents developed pressure ulcers that were new or worsened. This percentage at The Westwood Manor was only slightly higher than the Illinois average of 1.5% and the national average of 1.3% of short-stay residents with pressure ulcers that were new or worsened. This percentage was much higher than the Illinois average of 17.1% and the national average of 5.4%. 94.2% of The Westwood Manor’s long-stay residents were assessed and given the appropriate and seasonal influenza vaccine. This was on par with the Illinois and national averages. However, just 62.3% of The Westwood Manor’s long-stay residents were assessed and given the appropriate pneumococcal vaccine. This percentage was significantly lower than the Illinois average of 91.9% and the national average of 93.4%. 55.7% of The Westwood Manor’s long-stay residents received an antipsychotic medication. This compared poorly next to the Illinois average of 20.3% of nursing home residents and 17.3% of the national average in this category.
