The surgery was completed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emhc.org\/\">Elmhurst Memorial Hospital<\/a>. During the knee replacement, the artery behind the knee was cut with a surgical instrument at the level of the tibial plateau.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>At the time the artery was severed, the bleed was not detected.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As a result of the severed artery, Lapiana developed post-surgery compartment syndrome with severe pain, numbness and swelling in the right knee and calf while still in the post-anesthesia care unit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Dr. Alden requested a vascular surgery consult for a suspected arterial injury and also ordered an emergent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/ency\/article\/003327.htm\">arteriogram<\/a>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The arteriogram revealed a complete transection of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Popliteal_artery\">popliteal<\/a> artery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertkreisman.com\/medical-malpractice-lawyer\/cook-county-jury-sides-doctors-severed-artery-knee-replacement-trial\/#more-1444\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Orthopedic surgeon Kris Alden, M.D., performed the right knee replacement surgery on the plaintiff, Lawrence Lapiana, on May 26, 2011.\u00a0 Lapiana had a history of severe osteoarthritis in both knees.
