{"id":1024,"date":"2013-07-19T10:00:04","date_gmt":"2013-07-19T16:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chicagomedicalmalpracticeattorney-blog.com\/?p=1024"},"modified":"2013-07-15T12:07:30","modified_gmt":"2013-07-15T18:07:30","slug":"934000-cook-county-bench-trial-in-failure-to-diagnose-rectal-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.robertkreisman.com\/medical-malpractice-lawyer\/934000-cook-county-bench-trial-in-failure-to-diagnose-rectal-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"$934,000 Cook County Bench Trial in Failure to Diagnose Rectal Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Joseph Farias, age 29, began treatment with the defendant internist, Yolanda Co, M.D., in February 2002.<span>\u00a0<\/span>He came to the doctor with complaints of constipation for three years and rectal bleeding.<span>\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Co performed a rectal exam and ordered a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/colorectal-cancer\/colonoscopy-16695\">colonoscopy<\/a>, which came back negative.<span>\u00a0<\/span>There was no cause determined as to why Farias had rectal bleeding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In October 2003, Farias returned to Dr. Co with new complaints of rectal bleeding.<span>\u00a0<\/span>That visit was a cause of what became a medical malpractice lawsuit.<span>\u00a0<\/span>This time Dr. Co did a d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/colorectal-cancer\/digital-rectal-examination-dre\">igital rectal exam<\/a> and diagnosed internal hemorrhoids.<span>\u00a0<\/span>In Farias\u2019s Cook County complaint, it was alleged that the internal hemorrhoids could not be diagnosed through digital examination unless the internal hemorrhoids were visualized outside the anus.<span>\u00a0<\/span>The standard of care as contended required Dr. Co to perform an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/ency\/article\/003890.htm\">anoscopy <\/a>to properly visualize the hemorrhoids.<span>\u00a0<\/span>It was also asserted that should Dr. Co not have the facility to do the anoscopy, \u00a0she should have referred Farias to another physician such as a gastroenterologist.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Dr. Co defended the case by saying that she did observe prolapsing internal hemorrhoids (protruding out of the rectum), even though her chart \u00a0stated only internal hemorrhoids.<span>\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Co testified that the standard of care required a treating internist such as herself to grade and chart the severity of an internal hemorrhoid, but she admittedly didn\u2019t do that in October 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertkreisman.com\/medical-malpractice-lawyer\/934000-cook-county-bench-trial-in-failure-to-diagnose-rectal-cancer\/#more-1024\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joseph Farias, age 29, began treatment with the defendant internist, Yolanda Co, M.D., in February 2002.\u00a0He came to the doctor with complaints of constipation for three years and rectal bleeding.\u00a0Dr. Co performed a rectal exam and ordered a colonoscopy, which came back negative.\u00a0There was no cause determined as to why Farias had rectal bleeding.
