Defective Drugs – Reclast®
Reclast is a drug also known generically as Zoledronics acid which is prescribed for the prevention of osteoporosis. The maker of this pharmaceutical is Novartis A.G.
Unfortunately, the use of Reclast has caused or put patients at greater risks of developing severe, life-threatening side effects usually femur fractures and osteonecrosis of the jaw. Both of these side effects have been associated with the use of Reclast for osteoporosis patients.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Safety Communication whereby the agency approved an update to the drug’s label for the purpose of better informing physicians, medical providers and patients of the serious side effects and the increased risk of Reclast causing kidney failure, yet another and also damaging effect.
Reclast was first developed to treat osteoporosis, hypocalcaemia and other degenerative bone complications or illnesses. Reclast is a bisphosphonate. It is designed to aid in the natural process of homeostasis. Homeostasis is the ability of a cell to keep its internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological process. In other words, Reclast was designed to just stabilize or maintain the status quo of bone density. In the aging process, and its natural, bone density diminishes and is kept in balance by osteoclasts to generate new bone.
In cases of osteoporosis, bone dexterity is reduced at a faster rate than bone replacement. Because Reclast has a bisphosphonate contained within it, it reduces the breakdown of bone by preventing osteoclasts from destroying the bone anymore than what is naturally occurring. The medication was designed to promote bone growth at a steady rate.
The dangerous part of using bisphosphonates like Reclast is because it has been associated or linked to severe and debilitating conditions in some patients. Some patients who have used Reclast have experienced osteonecrosis of the jaw, musculoskeletal pain and diminished flexibility and also an increased rate of femur fractures. The side effects are extremely dangerous and have severely injured many individuals. There have been a series of lawsuits filed against Novartis A.G. for injuries caused by the taking of Reclast.
In evaluating whether a Reclast patient has a viable cause of action against Novartis and others for manufacturing, marketing and distributing this drug, the most common side effects from Reclast users include: low impact femur fractures, leg shortening, osteonecrosis of the jaw, femur shaft fractures, deformity of the thigh and general musculoskeletal pain.
Necrosis of the jaw is sometimes referred to as jaw death because it can be disfiguring and disabling. Necrosis is an infection that causes the destruction of bone mass. The onset of osteonecrosis of the jaw could be started by just minor dental work, a tooth extraction or a minor injury such as a fall.
In addition to the medication Reclast, other bisphosphonate osteoporosis medications that may put patients at risk include but may not be limited to the following:
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has published on the subject of the use of bisphosphonates and describes how it might cause femur fractures and other very serious side effects. The published article of February 22, 2011 is entitled, “Long-term Use of Bisphosphonates Increases Risks for Atypical Fractures.” Reclast is just one of the many bisphosphonates components that have been associated with the serious side effect injuries suffered by many unassuming patients around the country, including Illinois.
