{"id":89,"date":"2013-05-30T10:00:19","date_gmt":"2013-05-30T16:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chicagobirthinjurylawyersblog.com\/?p=89"},"modified":"2016-09-05T11:34:46","modified_gmt":"2016-09-05T16:34:46","slug":"13-million-verdict-for-death-of-baby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.robertkreisman.com\/birth-injury-lawyer\/13-million-verdict-for-death-of-baby\/","title":{"rendered":"$13 Million Verdict for Death of Baby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">A baby born at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.holycrosshospital.org\/\">Holy Cross Hospital<\/a> in June 2008 died three days after being discharged in apparent good health.<span>\u00a0<\/span>A lawsuit was filed following the death of this baby because before she was discharged, she had been examined twice by the defendant pediatrician who noted that she had a normal anus and normal genitalia.<span>\u00a0<\/span>However, the first two nurses who saw the newborn allegedly chose not to perform a visual inspection of the baby\u2019s anal area, which is a deviation from the standard of care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Just 16 days after the child\u2019s birth, she was rushed to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uchicagokidshospital.org\/\">University of Chicago Comer Children\u2019s Hospital <\/a>in cardiac arrest.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It was discovered then that she had been born without an anus and was diagnosed with a congenital defect in which the child had no anus, no vaginal orifice and no urethral orifice and only a single perineal orifice in which she was passing stool and urine.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">An emergency surgery was performed the same day but because of the delay in diagnosis of the defect, the child suffered bowel obstruction, which led to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/digestive-disorders\/intestinal_ischemia_infarction\">dead gut<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC137242\/\">abdominal compartment syndrome<\/a>.<span>\u00a0<\/span>The baby died five hours after the surgery;
