The defendant obstetrician, Dr. James Riva, did a vaginal delivery of the baby, Bailei Rae, at a hospital in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vil.maryville.il.us\/\">Maryville, Ill.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the course of the delivery of Bailei, a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shoulder_dystocia\">shoulder dystocia<\/a> occurred involving the anterior presenting shoulder. That means that the baby\u2019s shoulder was stuck on the pelvic bone of her mother, Jamie Rae. While performing maneuvers to relieve the shoulder dystocia, Dr. Riva allegedly exerted excessive traction on the baby\u2019s head, causing a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spine-health.com\/conditions\/spine-anatomy\/spinal-cord-and-spinal-nerve-roots\">5-level cervical nerve root injury <\/a>including a complete avulsion at C-8.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the 9 lbs 2 oz newborn baby, Bailei Rae, sustained a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/ency\/article\/001395.htm\">brachial plexus injury<\/a> to the posterior shoulder with permanent nerve root damage and Erb\u2019s palsy in the left arm.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.robertkreisman.com\/birth-injury-lawyer\/1-million-jury-verdict-brachial-plexus-birth-injury-caused-excessive-force\/#more-284\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On March 1, 2011, Jamie Rae was in induced for labor at 39 weeks gestation due to the large size of her baby.
