A stony hill that was once an island when glacial Lake Chicago covered the area thousands of years ago.

Early pioneers of this area gave the hill the name Stony Island because at a distance it looked like an island set in a trackless prairie sea. Calumet Heights area was swamp and unoccupied throughout the 19th Century. It was not until the railroad was built in 1881 along the western border of Chicago Heights that led to its development as a vital neighborhood of the City of Chicago.
